Type Fundamentals
Typography 1 | Spring 2018
The Type Fundamentals Book was my first experience and attempt using typography as an art form. Many people do not understand that type can completely change the overall appearance and layout of the design, and holds significant importance for that reason. For this book, we worked on flyer-style designs for the upcoming Skolos and Wedell show featuring the two designer's works over the years. The task was to display all of the required information for the show, but also incorporate their artwork into the design to give a glimpse into what the show was going to be about.
Colors and Font
For the colors in this book, I took a look at Skolos' and Wedell's own artworks and eye-dropped them into my designs. I also took certain graphics and elements from their posters to strengthen my designs and tie in their's with it.
The font used for this book was assigned to all students in the class. No other fonts were allowed to be used for this project. The typeface used is Univers.

The Design
Sticking with the same whimsical feeling throughout, I made sure each page had curvy forms to relate with the type. The construction of this book was made in accordion-style, meaning each page connected to the next via fold. I decided to try and connect the pages to make the book seem like one large art piece when opened. I did this using a mixture of dark and light graphics that served as the "ground" or "sky" as The Nightmare Before Christmas reminded me of.
After these graphics were set into place, the text was all arranged on a grid to create uniformity in the book. Pull quotes were also placed in different styles to express importance and uniqueness on the pages.

Finished Book
This entire book was focused primarily on using the same typeface in different layouts to create a cohesive book. It gave me the ability to create unique pages that use the same type using different colors and pictures.
